I received an email today, asking me to tell the respondent where I fit along the political spectrum. You have all probably seen these types of political tests, they fall along the lines of, "Would you prefer your airplane to make a safe landing or crash and burn where you and everyone else on the plane dies?" I detest this type of inquisition, when the real question is simply, "Scott, what are your politics." I've written so much on the subject I'm surprised that people don't already know, but here was my response. I am intentionally putting this entry in my blog so I can just copy and paste the link because this isn't the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last time I'm asked this question. Here was my response: I see a lot of these types of political 'tests' bandied around. They all follow the same format, there is only one correct answer, or you're an idiot. I don't think of politics in these columns, but I'm happy to tell you my political ideas and if you so choose, you can try to fit me in one of your columns. I'm a Republican. I believe in the protection of the constitution. I strongly believe in our republic and a representative form of government. I believe in a limited, responsible government. I believe that we should get government as small as possible and make it run as efficient as possible. I believe that as a society we need to protect the most vulnerable, and we need to find leaders that have the courage to draw the line of our social programs right there. I don't believe that as a productive American I owe any debt to another American simply because they exist. I have national level beliefs such as a strong national defense, and protection of our borders. I personally believe in the protection of life (anti-abortion personal belief). I believe in the simple protection of our constitution especially the 1st, 2nd and 10th amendment. And my current job in the GOP isn't really to grapple with much of these issues, instead it is to recruit, and support in their election quality candidates that support the Thurston County Platform. http://thurstonrepublicans.com/about-us.html Yours, Scott.
